The following information about each gun is recorded in most of the registers: Guard number: a running number allocated by the Society Barrel or maker’s number: a number allocated by the maker Description of gun Choke or cylinder: details of any special choke or cylinder Size of bore Order number: the number of the order the Society placed with the supplier Date of invoice: the date of the invoice from the supplier to the Society Soft : unknown. Finished: the name of the company or individual finishing the gun to the customer’s specification Cost (to buy in): the figures are recorded in code. The code used is MAKE PROFIT with M=1, A=2 etc. There can be more than one set of numbers - usually a basic price and the cost of any additional features requested by the purchaser Selling (price): price paid by the customer. Name of purchaser Ticket number: number of the receipt issued Bill number and how sold: number of bill sent to customer and/or how it was sold (eg sent to Bombay branch for distribution) Date when sold: the date the customer paid the bill Remarks: any other information that the salesperson wished to record about the purchase (eg sent to Bombay branch aboard the SS Egypt)

Additional information:
The Society's sales staff kept a register of all the guns the Society bought and sold. This series of volumes acted both as a record of its stock of guns but also as a register of its sales of guns, which was required by law. Staff allocated each gun a unique number, known as a guard number, and recorded these numbers (in numerical order) in this series of volumes. Alongside each guard number, staff described the gun, recorded details of its acquisition by the Society, and then, on its sale, added the date of purchase and details of the purchaser.
Initially, when a volume was full, staff began a new volume and copied the details of all the unsold guns from the previous volume into the new volume. Depending on how quickly they sold, individual guns may therefore be found in more than volume. In c 1890, the Society started a new system. Henceforth (from FRAS 309/6), each volume covered a fixed set of guard numbers and the practice of copying the details of unsold guns into the next volume ceased.
System of arrangement: The volumes are in guard number order. From FRAS 309/5, entries are also grouped by type of gun.
