D M Brown founded a drapery store at 80 High Street, Dundee in c 1890. In 1926, the company, by then D M Brown Ltd, was acquired by the Scottish Drapery Corporation Ltd, a management holding company, of Edinburgh. In August 1940, it was decided to split the wholesale and retail business of the company. D M Brown (Wholesale) Ltd was formed to deal with the wholesale side of the business, while D M Brown Ltd continued with the retail side of the business.
In September 1952, the Scottish Drapery Corporation Ltd was acquired by House of Fraser Ltd, department store retailers, of Glasgow, and D M Brown Ltd was incorporated as a major drapery, clothing and furnishing store within the company. On 31 July 1972, the name of the store was changed to Arnotts along with five other stores owned by House of Fraser Ltd which were to trade as an integrated group.
