W T Dunbar & Sons Ltd was incorporated in c 1905 to continue the business of Paulin & Dunbar, funeral undertakers and carriage hirers, of Edinburgh, Scotland. Its registered office was in Morrison Street, and it had branch offices in Montrose Terrace and Morningside Road, and stables and works in Newport Street. In about 1909, the company acquired Peter Moir, another undertaking and carriage hiring business in Edinburgh with a branch in Great Junction Street, Leith, and stables and works in Halmyre Street, Leith. By 1913, the company had opened an additional branch office in Raeburn Place. By 1928, the company had four more branch offices: Montagu Terrace, East Trinity Road, Thirlestane Lane and St Alban's Road. In 1957, the company's branch offices were Montrose Terrace, Morningside Road, Raeburn Place, Queensferry Road, Montagu Terrace, East Trinity Road and Strathearn Road.

In 1971, the company was taken over by House of Fraser Ltd, department store retailers, of Glasgow, Scotland. The company continued trading under the name W T Dunbar & Sons Ltd until June 1987 when the name was changed to House of Fraser (One) Ltd. It was wound up voluntarily in February 1988.
