The journal was initially compiled by Arnott & Co Ltd. In February 1938, the company was amalgamated with Robert Simpson & Sons Ltd, a Glasgow drapers and dressmakers, and was renamed Arnott-Simpson Ltd. The journal was continued by the new company.

Entries in the journal were posted to two private ledgers. The entries from 1936 to 27 January 1945 (folio 51r) were posted to the private ledger begun by Arnott & Co Ltd and continued by Arnott-Simpson Ltd (ref: FRAS 379/1). Entries from the year ending 25 January 1946 (folio 52l) to 1948 were posted to the private ledger of Arnott-Simpson Ltd (ref: FRAS 379/2). The folio reference of the corresponding entry in the private ledgers is recorded beside each entry in the journal.
