The executive committee was responsible for discussing and dealing with on a day to day basis all executive matters requiring immediate attention as well as reviewing the immediate and future trading and profit performance of group companies, current expense levels, employee numbers, overhead expenses, merchandising costs, sales promotional programmes, buying policies, control of cash throughout group companies, property development schemes, property disposals and acquisitions, management development needs and the proftiability of the total range of House of Fraser activities. The committee had to initiate plans to ensure that each company in the House of Fraser Group had an adequate management organisation tailored to its operational and budgeted needs and recommend them to the board for approval. The committee then had to implement these plans and provide the necessary resources to ensure their fulfilment. The work of the committee was essentially concerned with shorter term executive decision making leaving the board with the responsibility for longer term strategic decisions.
