On 30 October 1850, Joseph Guy opened his drapery store in North Saint Mary's Gate, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, England. By 1871, the shop was situated at 19 Victoria Street, Grimsby, and trading as Guy & Smith, silk mercers and general drapers. In 1913, the shop was completely rebuilt to increase the space and create a new homogeneous shop front. The store at that time comprised costume, dress goods and silks, ladies' and children's outfitters, millinery and furnishing departments. In 1920, the company was incorporated as a limited liability company trading as Guy & Smith Ltd.
