Company history

The company was formed as Stewart & McDonald in 1826. In 1900, it was registered as a limited liability company, Stewart & McDonald Ltd, with registered offices at 21 Buchanan Street Glasgow. It operated a large wholesale and retail business, specialising in dress materials and ready-made clothes. In 1903, the company's warehouse on Argyle Street and Buchanan Street was rebuilt. Designed by the architect, Horatio Bromhead, it was set back in line with the rest of Buchanan Street and comprised six storeys, together with a domed corner section and a central pediment feature. The company also owned factories in Mitchell Street and Rutherglen Road in Glasgow and in Leeds, England and Strabane, Northern Ireland. It also had branches in London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Rochdale, Birmingham, Belfast, Dublin, Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Preston, Hull, Montreal, Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney, Dunedin and Port Elizabeth.

In 1913, the retail section of the company was hived off from the larger wholesale business as a separate private limited liability company, McDonald?s Ltd. In September 1922, because of large losses, Stewart & McDonald Ltd was forced to amalgamate with another Glasgow company, J & W Campbell.
