In about 1850, John Arnott, a Dublin merchant, established a drapery and general warehouse at 19 Jamaica Street, Glasgow as a branch of his business already established in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Cork and Dublin, Ireland. The shop traded as Arnott, Cannock & Co. It sold men's clothes, dress materials, towellings, sheetings, linens, blankets, quilts and counterpanes.
In September 1860, the partnership between Arnott and Cannock was dissolved, and Thomas Arnott, half brother of John Arnott, assumed control of the Glasgow business which traded thereafter as Arnott & Co.
