Biographical history
From at least 1913, the Society organised a number of special promotions. These
included Christmas promotions, which were advertised to members via a special
Christmas edition of the monthly circular (ref: FRAS 504), issued in the middle
of November. Other special promotions included the sale of spring and autumn
fashions. These were also advertised via special editions of the monthly
circular, which were called spring and autumn fashion lists and were issued
twice a year (ref: FRAS 504).
The Society also organised regular end of season sales. Every January and July,
from 1913, it issued winter and summer sale lists to advertise its sales goods
(ref: FRAS 504). These lists were special editions of the monthly circular.
All the circulars were sent free to members upon application. In 1939, because of
the short supply of merchandise during the second world war, the production of
the circulars was discontinued.
In 1971, to celebrate its centenary, the company launched a series of promotional
events including the publication of an illustrated history of the company (ref:
FRAS 776).
Sales promotion management was an activity carried out to fulfil the function of marketing.
