In 1865, Henry Binns, the owner of a drapery shop at 173 High Street, Bishop's Wearmouth, Sunderland, England, retired and control of the business passed to his son, Joseph John. The business thereafter traded as H Binns, Son & Co.

In 1884, the shop moved premises to 38 and 39 Fawcett Street. The old frontage was replaced and the inside remodelled. On the first floor were mantle and millinery departments and fitting rooms and on the second floor were workshops.

In 1897, the business was floated as a limited liability company, H Binns, Son & Co Ltd.
