J & R Allan Ltd, silk mercers and drapers, was incorporated in 1897. Its registered offices were at 84 South Bridge Street, Edinburgh. In 1920, in order to build an extension to the premises, the company acquired the neighbouring drapery and general warehouse business of Paterson & Smith. In November 1928, the company was acquired by the Scottish Drapery Corporation Ltd, a management holding company, of Edinburgh. In September 1952, the Corporation and its subsidiaries were acquired by House of Fraser Ltd, department store retailers, of Glasgow. J & R Allan Ltd went into voluntary liquidation in 1953.
